The Floating system is an innovative cable laying technology, whereby water is pumped along the channel in order to push the cable forward.
The water generates a floating force and dragging motion, which in turn generate a distributed force that acts on the whole of the cable in a perfectly uniform manner.
This distributed force ensures that the length of the cable is not determined by problems with the trench, whilst also reducing the friction derived from dragging the cable.
The resistance remains linear and does not increase exponentially, as it does when cables are pulled through convoluted trenches.
We have tested this system in practice, whilst laying optical cable in Telecom Italia's facilities, and found the resulting friction to be a mere 20% of that experienced when pulling on the cable or using compressed air systems.
When laying cables of up to 3000m, the dragging force generated by the water is significantly greater than when using other methods.
The cable's forces of reaction will therefore be subjected to a constant force in the direction of movement. The presence of bends in the cable is therefore negligible.
At the point of entry of the channel, a machine feeds the cable and water under pressure (caterpillar method), enabling the regulation of the speed of progress at wich the cable is being laid.
MAIN BENEFITS
-
Easy cable laying
-
Laying of cable from one end only
-
Minimal road disturbance - the only parts that are affected are the ends where the cable is laid.
-
No problems with permits in areas of traffic (see previous point).
-
Ease of laying the cable
-
Execution of installation in less time
